Re: The Cuter aspects of Dragon Ball.

I think it's the only time you see Goku cry. There's also losing Master Roshi in Super, both scenes are incredibly touching though. Off the top of my head there are at least two other ocassions we see Goku cry, once during the Sugoroku Space episode in GT and again when losing Android 8 in Path to ...

Re: Toonami Rewind Block On Fridays.

I'm not sure what criticism there is too address? You just said it wasn't a good dub. What am I supposed to address? I think the point was do you not think your being too kind to Funimation's Yu Yu Hakusho dub because of nostalgia? As it has a charming cheesiness to it, but is, by no means a good d...

Re: Australian Madman VHSs - Commercials/ Ads

I wish I knew, unless I'm mistaken Madman released Funimation's catalogue in Oceania, probably other series from different distributors in America as they kind of had a monopoly on the Australian and New Zealand animated home video market. So maybe some other battle shounen that was dubbed in North ...

Re: Toonami Rewind Block On Fridays.

In the Funi dub Vegeta drinks juice BUT in the Ocean dub he drinks MILK isn't exactly an improvement or "smarter dialog" Granted its not a HUGE improvement, but milk has calcium and is good for bone growth. "I drink plenty of juice" just felt like a cheap quip intended to make V...

Re: Toonami Rewind Block On Fridays.

The Kai dub is now 14 years old and like someone else said is now older than the original dub was by the time Kai first aired in 2010. For comparison, if Kai came out in 1996 (like the Ocean dub did), it would definitely be old by 2010. So, Kai coming out in 2010 is definitely old by 2024 standards...

Re: Toonami Rewind Block On Fridays.

I think most fans probably have the same criteria for a genuine, unironically good dub: Appropriate casting based on characters, not voices Good voice acting Faithful scripts that sound natural in English Not replacing the score Produced uncut I love the Westwood dub but hesitate to say it's not an ...

Re: Do you consider Goku a Hero?

In the general sense yes, he’s a super hero, he wears funny clothes , has special abilities that he uses primarily for good against people with similar abilities who use them with evil intentions and he has a hot line ( ki sensing) that goes off to let him know when someone is being hurt or evil is...

Re: Do you consider Goku a Hero?

Great answers thus far. I guess you could say that heroism is in the eyes of the beholder. As I said Goku never sets out to be the saviour of all and proclaim himself to be the hope of the universe, as he does in the Z dub, but at the same time he's not an asshole and does mean well even when he's n...

Re: If Dragon Ball goes beyond EOZ what would you like to see

I think the "it didn't happen" is a holdover from the pre-Super era when GT was Dragon Ball's punching bag. And I mean... sure, it didn't happen, these are all fictional stories. I'm no fan of Jordan Peterson but I think he was on to something when he said fictional stories, like those tol...

Re: If Dragon Ball goes beyond EOZ what would you like to see

This might be unpopular and I have accepted that GT simply didn't happen (you can say "in the main timeline" or whatever, but didn't happen) GT didn't happen in Toriyama's timeline, it doesn't make it an invalid story, quite the contrary because Toriyama endorsed it . It was just not his ...

Re: If Dragon Ball goes beyond EOZ what would you like to see

I wouldn't mind a reworking or reimagining of GT's story arcs in a world where the 12 Universes, Beerus, Whis, Zero, etc all exist. It wouldn't be as good without Akihito Tokunaga's score, the Japanese cast at their prime and GT's unique 90s aesthetic but I'd be interested to see the Baby and Evil D...

Do you consider Goku a Hero?

This was brought up in Non-thread-worthy discussions but I think it's a big enough topic to warrant its own. We've all heard it before Funimation made the naive, battle obsessed manchild who grew up in the sticks a generic Superman clone, TOEI Goku from the old movies is Funimation-lite, but in spit...

Re: Toonami Rewind Block On Fridays.

I wonder if a Toonami channel would work in the US, like what the UK and Ireland had from 2003 to 2007? I know historically Cartoon Network has liked the perk of royalties that come with their original programming, but does anyone watch the main channel anymore? Might be better at this point to just...

but like someone else said (I believe Dragon Ball Ireland), if Japan is airing Daima on Fuji TV, why not elsewhere too? Yup, Daima will be airing on Fuji TV . I could be wrong but if its coming to traditional TV in Japan I don't know why other territories would be any different. It may premiere exc...

Re: Dragon Ball stuff found from the least expected places

I wish I had a story like that, I hope I'm wrong but I still get the impression the vast majority of Irish people have no clue what Dragon Ball is, and if they do they just vaguely know the brand name. Outside major urban areas like Dublin, Galway and Cork I would be pleasantly shocked if I ever saw...

Re: Recasts that ended up being better than the original

I guess if we're mentioning Funi Kai recasts then the OP would define the "original" as the original cast of a company's dub, not in the language in general. I was mentioning Harmony Gold and Creative Corp Product actors because they are both English dubs and predate Funimation's dubs of D...

Exactly. I'd say also Roshi being flushed down the toilet should be kept, although problem is the rest of that scene would probably need to be retained to explain that.

Re: Is original Dragon Ball really that unpopular?

I'm okay with the sexual humour being cut, as much as I love original Dragon Ball a lot of it hasn't aged well, particularly the stuff with Roshi. I'm so happy everytime someone gives him a smack, especially a woman like Bulma.

Re: What dub do new English Speaking fans go with more? DBZ or DBZKai

I dunno, I haven't heard anyone believe the Toonzai edit was the default in like 10 years . It definitely was a problem early on in Kai's run but with Toonami running unaltered Kai for a a good decade it seems everyone is up to speed that Kai was not made with Blue Popo and sparkle splosions in min...
