Re: Super Animation Catalogue - [Updated with #52]
I'm not going to discuss why it's mediocre in this thread, but this also another cancerous school of thought on this forum. It's not an "opinion", it's a fact - if you don't think so then you have a very limited understanding of storytelling, character building, production, and a lot of o...

Re: Gokû's accent's pronunciation emphasis
Japanese is a pitch-accent language, not a stress-accent language like English. That has to be kept in mind when having these sorts of discussions. So, you're asking the wrong question specifically, but generally there is a point to be made on the pitch/prosody aspect, which is what I'm guessing you...

Re: Your Dream Composer
Dead or alive? First person who came to mind was Stravinsky. There may be others who would fit the mould, but he came to mind, and thinking of some of his most famous works, there's certainly something his flavour of 20th Century classical music could add to Dragon Ball. Firstly, his music is incred...

Re: Dumbest things you've heard/ said as DB fan ?
I can't remember what people used to say when I was a kid (probably really silly things in the absence of reliable information), but since my return to the series, I saw someone who commented that Super is being animated based on a manga that ran over a decade ago in the early 2000s or something. :c...

Re: List some Things that you don't like about the fandom
I despise the very idea of a "fandom" and people identifying themselves by the shows that they like. Also this thread is trouble waiting to happen. Agree entirely, although most of that stems from dislike of the neologism 'fandom' and the conceptual understanding of a community based on a...

Re: Message for fluent japanese Dragon Ball watchers
Being able to tell what characters are saying without having to rely on translations definitely gives you a greater understanding of things that aren't really translatable, such as the discussion earlier in the thread about pronouns, in addition to the varying levels of politeness/humbleness presen...

Re: Message for fluent japanese Dragon Ball watchers
Curiously, there don't seem to have been replies from many watchers of Dragon Ball who are fluent in Japanese, given the title of this thread. Out of curiosity, other than the official translators for Kanzenshuu (Herms et al. ), are there many members of the forum who are fluent? There are an awful ...

Re: Dragon Ball Z considered "epic" too much?
"Epic" in fandom discussion about Dragon Ball is the equivalent of "visceral" and such in video game discussions. It's a crutch word, and one that no longer means anything. I basically have no idea what you're saying when you use that word. To be fair, Dragon Ball as a narrative...

Re: Message for fluent japanese Dragon Ball watchers
I'm not fluent, merely learning at the moment. However, I have noticed that as I progress deeper into my study of the language, my experience with the various animated shows in the franchise has begun to change. It opens up a wider perspective on the franchise, as subtitled translations can only eve...

Re: Weird misconceptions you used to have
I also thought that Goten was Gohan's son. Since I was a little kid, and given the time skip plus a lack of Goku around the house and Goten and Gohan training together, it just seemed to make sense to me and the assumption stuck. Those were strange times.

Re: Most memorable BS dub lines / names
The mordant repartee is fairly unique to Freeza in the dub, with other "silly lines" being deemed as such for disparate reasons. As a musician this one made me laugh. In music, a mordant (or mordent) is a type of ornamental flourish where one plays a note, then an adjacent one before quic...

Re: Social Media: Attacking Staff, Hypocritical Opinions, et
I recently read an article discussing the psychology of internet anonymity and its relationship to people who have narcissistic dispositions in real life. Unfortunately I can't remember where I read it, or I'd post a link. Essentially the conclusion was that the internet becomes a conduit for people...
