Re: How much have you spent on the franchise?

Around $400 since 2002-ish. I can actually ballpark it as aside from one of the FigArts Zero figures my Dragon Ball stuff is all video games and FUNi home releases so that is less to track with a lot of easy MSRP's to go by. I don't buy a lot of video game sequels and held off on buying the series u...

Re: MistareFusion's Dragon Ball Dissection! (Updated 12/31/18!)

So I just saw the new film and: Vegeta is pretty adamant about having Freeza killed off before he can become stronger than him and Goku. So I guess it really is just the Cell arc as the outlier. Funny thing is Freeza lasts an entire hour fighting Broli without looking defeated at all, doesn't reall...

Re: MistareFusion's Dragon Ball Dissection! (Updated 12/31/18!)

I wonder whether this panel from Toyotarou wasn't actually a jab at Toriyama's writing, given that his characters are immune to emotional damage. https://i.imgur.com/OjejfaC.png DB characters no matter what happens, what they go through and what is the next ugly thing that Goku does, will always ac...

Re: Does anyone ever actually watch the Z dub with the Kikuchi score?

I do. Moments where the old FUNi dub fights or meshes with the music are fun to spot, but in general it brings it one step closer to the series original composition, so it doesn't jar me in the moment.

Re: Who do you think Vegeta considers to be a friend?

Bulma and Goku are the only ones I confidently assume. Vegeta seems to think a bit more highly of Gohan in Super, vouching for him before Goku does, but you can only take so much from that.

Re: Dragon Ball Movies HD Remaster - Amazon Video/Netflix Japan - Discussion Thread

So the impression I'm getting is that the Blu-Rays versions should be largely good barring some DNR that we can't make out entirely until they release? I don't know what the various encryption schemes of the digital storefronts are so physical might be my first choice.

I did say 10 years in my Trunks video yesterday. It will be 7 years later this month that I began Dragon Ball Dissection, but coola and I are referring to the amount of time I've been reviewing on my channel. That will be 10 years this April. Silly me, I forgot how far back your prior content goes.

Coola it will be seven years this January, don't scare us like that! But how many years ago was it you said "You know, no, I think I've got another one in me." and for at least that long you made it the standard. 17 minutes on Android 13, and probably one of them spent on things you actual...

Re: Dragon Ball Movies HD Remaster - Amazon Video/Netflix Japan - Discussion Thread

When we're talking about people "caring", I think we refer less to the 16:9 presentation of 4:3 TV shows, a newer "artistic" concern and question, and more to the decades of 4:3 cropped theatrical movies, which were in part an object of the physical size of a lot of CRT televisio...

Re: Do you think Dragon Ball dub would have benefit from an English Recast?

I can enjoy the FUNi cast and even the original dubs for sheer inoculation, but there is no double-talk in saying the series was long grandfathered into a cast begot of terrible circumstances that it would never have had today, as castings since Kai have made very clear. The American dub was divided...

Thank you so much for putting that together. Count me for one who knew jack all about the very genesis of all this (but never claimed to know anything he didn't, either!), amazing how little things work out. He actually got to meet Tezuka, that's so cool! Will check out archive for sure!

As luck would have it, FUNi's 4x3 single discs of at least the original 13 Z movies do have FUNi English dub subtitle tracks. Look for those.

Re: This series has held up so good to me.

Cipher nailed it describing Toriyama as "whimsical nihilism", and boy does it let the series do a lot of silly things without getting you thinking too much about it! I was actually surprised at how much I enjoyed Battle of Gods, any misgiving I have with it ultimately give way to To...

Re: This series has held up so good to me.

When I gave Dragon Ball another shot I was expecting it to be insufferable, for the usual reasons- "Toriyama writes silly stuff, weak characterization, it gets out of hand, he kind of runs out of tricks after a while", etc. But of course a return involves going through the Japanese anime p...

Re: Who remembers the Dry Era (The Gap)?

It bears asking what the "dry era" actually is. The wheels for the Japanese revival were just going into motion as the American Toonami airings of GT were winding down, and FUNi was releasing their box sets in the states in 2007, and every region has their own timeline. The only thing I wo...

Re: Has your opinion on Faulconer softened over time?

I am a Toonami-viewer who never really "equated" the FUNi dub or replacement soundtracks to the series, so I never thought much of it and tend to watch the FUNi dub with Kikuchi anyway. Aside from the Buu theme it was the Legacy of Goku games that really reminded me of it, I think it works...

Then what is the point? Also which Disney Blu-Rays to avoid? I've known they do FUNimation things for a while and haven't bought any. Unfortunately, every Disney Blu-ray has some level of unnecessary restoration. The worst ones in my mind are The Sword in the Stone, Dumbo, Robin Hood, and Aladdin. ...

Re: Dragon Ball Movies HD Remaster - Amazon Video/Netflix Japan - Discussion Thread

Aren't Super episodes vectorized at some point? Which would mean they are effectively "resolution proof". Sort of, but not really. The line art is prior to colouring, but the actual compositing and mastering is done in a 1600x900 composition in After Effects, and then scaled out to 1080p ...

Re: Another omg Goku is voiced by a woman in Japanese discussion

The amount of time of it takes to acclimate to her voice and the whiplash of hearing it out of an adult Goku to fade it terribly overstated, for sure- I didn't regularly watch in Japanese until I started picking up FUNi releases in 2009 and the "transition" was almost instant simply becaus...
