Dragon Soul melody comparison...

Post by Rob » Fri Sep 16, 2011 9:27 pm

Okay, so for quite some time, there's been something bugging me about "Dragon Soul". Specifically, something about the melody that seemed vaguely familiar, but I couldn't put my finger on it.

Well, somehow, something reminded me of a certain late-80s sitcom today, and something just clicked in my head. So, for comparison:
Dragon Soul: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yY6SYZyM4yY
The theme from Perfect Strangers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-6sGmI7ciA

So, am I crazy? Or is there actually some similarity in the music between the two?

They have a similar mood, are in the same key (C Major), use the same scales, and are sung by solo males. I could see maybe a "in the vein of" or "in the style of", or even maybe "inspired by", but I don't think it was ripped off or copied. They are separate works. Different tempos, different instruments, different chord progressions, melodies, rhythms, etc.

The most similar part is for two notes, when they both go C--- G--- in the sung melody for dotted quarter notes:

But I bet that's just coincidence.
