The best looking movies?
Another art style thread (as it's one of my favorites). This time, solely for Dragon Ball animated movies. Which film do you think is the best looking? I personally loved The Dead Zone. The vibrant red colors throughout and nice shading always stood out to me, as well as the detail and designs of the locations (specifically Garlic Jr.'s hideout). I also appreciate the framing as it's one of the few DB movies I can watch where everything seems well composed, whether in widescreen or fullscreen.
But thats just me.
What Dragon Ball film do you think is the best looking? Feel free to post pictures as examples.

Re: Movies with the best looking animation?
I second Dead Zone and add Movie 12, which I think also looks really good animation wise.
Re: Movies with the best looking animation?
Apart form the bad CG, Battle of Gods is clearly the best animated. Now for which is the best looking? That's a bit trickier. I personally love the art direction in Movie 2, but Movie 1 just oozes with atmosphere.
How do you get into the Ginyu Force? With a letter of RECOOMEndation!
Re: Movies with the best looking animation?
Movie 12 and 13 still look the best looking DBZ-everything to me, part of it because of how the character designs look part of it because of the color pallete.
This is what I think about when the term "Dragon Ball Art-Style" comes around, it just looks so good. Movie 1, 2 and 3 also look really good thanks to their atmosphere, however 3 has some off-model shots that kinda look odd.

1. Movie 10: Broly-Second Coming
Cinematography at its best. The Family Kamehameha sequence specifically highlighted this point.
While most dbz films would have at least one crude drawings/animation, M10 suprisingly had none.
2. Movie 12: Fusion Reborn
Animation wise: top-notch
3. Movie 8: Broly- The Legendary Super Saiyan
Ironically, Tadayoshi Yammamuro's 1st film as...his work here would put BOG/ROF to shame.
The coolest scenes of the lot are Goku vs RSSJ Broly & LSSJ Broly tanking MSSJ Goku's KHH at point blank...good times~

Re: Movies with the best looking animation?
I quite like the animation style of Movies 1-3; they were very well-choreographed and animated. The drawing style was a lot looser, rounded, but closer to Toriyama's art at the time. The color palettes were good too, except for Movie 3. But of course, they were intentionally going for drab and dreary with that one.
Movies 12 & 13 never fail to impress me. The models are very tight and refined, thanks to Yamamuro. And yet the key animation and choreography didn't suffer. Colors and lighting choices were also top-notch.
I can't wait to check out RoF this summer and see if it can surpass BoG or even some of these older gems.

Movie 12 and 13 without a doubt are the best in my opinion.

How do you figure that. There are one or two really well animated shots but the rest is painfully sub par. It also has some of the worst drawings I've ever seen in DB:MarCas92 wrote:Apart form the bad CG, Battle of Gods is clearly the best animated. Now for which is the best looking? Re: Movies with the best looking animation?
Gotta say Deadzone, Revenge of Cooler, Fusion Reborn and Wrath of the Dragon! With special mention to Movie 8! They all had pretty good animation and art quality. Everything was just breathtaking...literally in some moments. Like Cooler flying through the Kamehameha and punching Goku. I remember my jaw dropping at that when I was younger.
Going on hiatus. Too much stuff in RL to deal with for me to keep up with posts here for now. Was fun, hope you all have a nice day and future! Volt signing off.

Definitely Battle of Gods. I mean... Just look at it:
If Resurrection 'F' looks better than Battle of Gods then I will be blown away.

Re: Movies with the best looking animation?
Kinda surprised that no one's mentioned the 10th Anniversary Movie yet. Always sticks out in my mind as one of the peaks of DB animation. I know some people aren't too big on how Goku looks throughout the film, but I always remember the overall movie being absolutely gorgeous.
DBZ Movies 10-13 also stand out as being particularly well animated. 10 and 11 are extremely solid looking, while 12 and 13 produce some unique atmospheres for the series. Was actually watching the latter the other day, and it really does create the look and feel of an actual movie. I think the darker colour pallette goes a long way in achieving this. The scenes in the city and at Tapion's hideout are very memorable.
Unfortunately, I'm on my phone right now so I don't have any screencaps to put up with this post. Might get around to doing that later.

July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.

Re: Movies with the best looking animation?
I think the later movies all have really good animation. Particularly Fusion Reborn and Wrath of the Dragon though. They're still the best DBZ has ever looked in my opinion. Battle of Gods looked great, apart from the odd moment here and there where the CGI looked off.
Of course, I haven't seen Resurrection F yet and that looks like it could be one of the best looking yet. Some of the action scenes look great.

Re: Movies with the best looking animation?
Mystical Adventure, Dead Zone, and movie 13 are the best looking films in the franchise with great character designs, gorgeous scenery, higher key frame out put, and good stories (Mystical Adventure might follow the Red Ribbon, and 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai a bit too closely but balances it out well feeling fresh with fantastic emotional moments and suspense).
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

Movie 9 has the best animation. It just looks great, even to this day. I'm also a big fan of Movie's 2, 12, and 13.

Re: Movies with the best looking animation?
I'm not sure I would say any of the films have 'good animation'. Certainly nothing on the level of some of the Naruto and Bleach films. Hell, Saint Seiya Omega Episode #51 looks better than any of the Dragon Ball films and it is only a television episode. It does to show the staff one selects really sets the mood, not the budget.
I do like the backgrounds for the second Dragon Ball Z film, though. I wish Hatano Morio could direct a more elaborate remake of that film.
