Third weekend in Argentina

""Dragon Ball Z" dropped from first to fifth, but yesterday topped 400,000 viewers."

I'd estimate that at being a US total of about $2.5-2.6 million.

Official numbers in from Argentina, it dropped from #1 to #6 (though 3 films did open that weekend), it dropped 55% and made $243,000. It's made $2.67 million there in total.

In Chile it dropped to #3, 71% drop but made $202,000 for a total of $1.01 million.

It opened in Brazil where it was #4 and made $765,000. I was expecting more from there, similar to Mexico but I guess it's not as popular?

That's it for now, the other markets will be updated later apparently.

That increases it's total to $42.4 million.

Couple more numbers here.

In Peru it did $88,000 total $1.78 million.

In Mexico it did $207,000 total $4.3 million.

First opening weekend for Venezuela it did $404,000 and it was #1 beating Elysium.

First opening weekend for Uruguay it did only $22,000 and it was #3. It's only a small market.

No numbers from Ecuador so I guess that's it. All that leaves in Colombia.

Total overall is $43.4 million.

Box office results from the past weekend are in.

First of all Colombia did $148,000 the week prior, dropped to #5 and last weekend it had another big drop did $31,000 and that puts it at a total of $1.14 million.

In Brazil it dropped to #9 and did $241,000 for a total of $1.48 million.

In Venezuela it only dropped 55% and did $181,000 for a total of $737,000.

Good drop in Chile only 46% it did $108,000 and it's made $1.25 million there so far.

The other markets all had hefty drops and did under $100,000 but the total between Argentina, Mexico and Uruguay was $131,000.

Opens in Bolivia tomorrow and Taiwan the next day.

Grand total is $45.4 million.

Thanks for keeping this updated. I expect Taiwan to be a relatively good market. In overseas Asia there's quite a lot of income potential, especially if Dragonball Evolution is anything to go off.

Well unfortunately I doubt I'll be able to post any numbers it does in Taiwan as BOM haven't updated any numbers from there since September 2011.

The movie could do with being released in China. Dragon Ball Evolution did pretty decently there almost aswell as Japan. Not that I expect the movie to do anywhere close to $30 million if it were to open there but it could do a nice chunk.

China has one of the biggest film markets is which movies like Iron Man 3 got special China treatments and why Transformers 4 is getting filmed in China. DBE did well in China then I guess China must have a decent fan base in that country.

DBE made $7.9 million in China not far off from the $8.4 million it made in Japan.

Compared to now that amount is nothing but it was the 10th biggest film of the year there. Since then China has exploded into the biggest market outside of US.

I don't know what it'd do there or what the chances of it even being released there are but it would have the chance to make more money there than what it did from all across South and Latin America.

China only allows a certain amount of foreign films to get theatrical releases in the country. By shooting some of the movie there they can bypass that regulation.

Numbers have updated. I won't go all into the details but overall it's coming to the end now, it added about $440,000 in the past week.

It'll pass $46 million and won't touch $50 million unless it heads over to some other regions.

The movie opened in Spain and it opened at #6 with only $277,000 which really isn't a lot however it was only released in 55 theatres and for that it was actually a good number.

It's passed $48 million by the end of the brief US run hopefully it will have surpassed $50 million.

I wouldn't be surprised if we got a new series out of this, or something big, if the budget was really 500,000, and the fanbase trounced it.

Expect Toei to throw DB fans a bone in the near future.

The average television episode's budget is $100,000-300,000. This movie is about four episodes put together and while the animation is not particularly well done it probably cost more than $400,000 or so. Even at around $1,000,000 the film still made nearly fifty-times it's budget back, anyway.

Definitely, I heard Toei's been aiming for 90,000-100,000 an episode lately. LOL

Might you recall where you heard this figure? Not that I don't believe you, it's certainly possible in light of these quotes from Mabuchi Yuuko's linkedin profile.

I doubt the movie will crack the Top 10 when the movie comes out in the US. We might lucky enough to reach 3 million overall in the US. I doubt Funi will spend a lot of money marketing the movie. So don't be too upset if not many fans see the movie. I remember a few people had high hopes and hoping that this movie will reach over 200 million worldwide.

I don't know where I subconciously absorbed the info from, but I do absorb info like a sponge. I heard that most anime companies have been aiming for 90,000-100,000 an episode as of late, and that Toei was one of them. And then the thread was full of Toei bashing, and people were saying ''no wonder One Piece now looks like shit'' stuff like that.

I was just lurking, thinking of Toei as cheapskates.

This was 4-6-7-8 weeks before Yuuko's post, at the least. TBH, I didn't even know who he was until you posted.

I don't know if you mean by the opening day or weekend but it'd be extremely unlikely to break the top 10 for the weekend because the movie opens on the Tuesday through to the Saturday. It's possible for the opening day though.

As for the movies budget DC animated movies cost around $3.5 million so I'd guess it was somewhere around or possibly a bit more than that amount. Then of course there's all the advertising but it would have definitely have made it's money back.

It's really not that far off from DBE, that made $57 million. I have no doubt this movie could have surpassed that if it opened in more countries. It may have actually grossed more than $48 million. Box Office Mojo only have data for Italy and South Korea's opening numbers for example, would it have not run for more than that though?

$3.5 million is actually supposedly for the entire year's worth of films. James Tucker once said each film was like three TV episodes tossed together, so I suspect the budget for each of the DCAU films is more like $900,000-1,000,000, given the budget of an animated episode is about $300,000-5,000,000 and these films really don't look any different from what Justice League or Young Justice had going for them.
