Re: Episode #0384 (12 July 2015)
The Vegeta portion of episode 2 was amazing. I loved every minute of it. Vegeta in awkward situations/out of his element is some of the best kind of Dragon Ball fanservice to me. I also loved the foreshadowing with the stage near the end; how everyone's trying to goad him to come up on stage when he's going to have to do that exact same sort of thing so many episodes from now to entertain Beerus. *u*
The Bingo Stage is behind Bulma in the next episode preview, after all. >u>
Re: Pop Idol reference
I took it as a meta joke at the fact that the oracle fish who lives with them is voiced by Shōko Nakagawa, who is a pop idol (of sorts).

Yeah, I came here to post that. There was a lot of discussion about it back, when BoG was released and that explanation was always the one given.Chuquita wrote:I took it as a meta joke at the fact that the oracle fish who lives with them is voiced by Shōko Nakagawa, who is a pop idol (of sorts).
Also nice to hear about that tidbit about planets going missing, possibly relating to the universe 6 arc.
I had my own theory about it back, when we were all speculating about Resurrection F. My idea was that Goku's absorption of Beerus' energy ball at the end of BoG was in fact, Goku unknowingly teleporting it to another universe, where it then wrecked havoc, until it fizzed out.
Though of course that tidbit could also just be a God of Destruction doing his job.

Something mentioned in the podcast caught my attention which I was sort of interested in replying. Basically, why "canonicity" matters.
I think there are at least 2 schools of thought on why it would matter, one which I would call plot-interpretation (which I think you covered) and the other is the character-interpretation.
In the plot interpretation, we want to know what is and isn't canon because we want to square the timeline out in our heads: if there are inconsistencies, we want to know what they are so we can try to resolve them, sometimes in crazy ways, sometimes in more handwavy ways. But it basically makes the world a bit richer to think it is some way internally consistent even if completely bizarre. If something is "canon" we can use it to build up our picture of that reality. But if something is not canon, we can treat like a glorified piece of fanfiction, almost: a (sometimes) enjoyable romp in the world we love, but if things don't match up we don't need to reconcile it. At the same time, by virtue of it being "non-canon" we can't use it to build up our picture of the reality without having to resolve or ignore inconsistencies. It is a trade-off, basically: the more things are canon the more retcons and hand-waves you need, but the richer the world might be.
The character interpretation is similar, but focused on characters. This is less focused on reconciling exact details of the plot, but more with generating a mental picture of the characters, and being able to grow closer to them through little details revealed in the source material. Canonicity matters here because it determines when someone acts "in character" or "out of character", and gives you greater predictive ability about what the characters might do in what-if situations. So there might be different degrees of canonicity: things that show valid character interpretations and actions are seen as more canonical than things that present the character in a drastically different light (even if there is no inherent contradiction). A plot-driven person might have no problem reconciling GT as canon -- nothing is inherently contradictory (as of the writing of this post) so far. But people who are more worried about character canonicity might not like it because few of the characters consistently make decisions or act they way we are used to -- they feel like different people. But the character canon person mgiht have less trouble accepting as "canon" BoG and Super, even though they are retelling events and events are in slightly different places and with details that can't be reconciled: if the characters are acting in fundamentally the same ways, we know more about how these people act and react to situations -- a retelling just more details.
I love watching the anime, for example, but I ultimately consider the manga the canon -- not because I think "garlic jr." somehow breaks continuity, but because I think people act very out of character in filler, and that bothers me more than whether Toriyama only had 8 months elapse between wishes.
And although it is perfectly valid to just take the approach: it is just a show, nobody is keeping track of all the details, define your own canon, etc, I think there are ramifications to how people build their own internal fantasy worlds and interpretations of the work based on what they consider authorative, and people have different motivations for considering certain things or certain other things canon.

"There are two monkeys in my head fighting in my head about how I feel about Super retelling the new movies."
I hear that. If Super is meant to be taken as following the manga, than we can take the TV versions as our reference points and escort the movies to bizzaro world with the first seventeen, so be it. Maybe I am not deep enough in the anime space to have heard it, but I have never heard of an instance in which one product is de-legitimized (in story placement, not corporate acknowledgement) less than two months after premiering, before a home release, even! It would explain, to me, why Resurrection F was a throwaway premise- it was purely an interest gauger.

@Mike, Jake and Heath
When you guys were saying how you thought it was cheap on Toei's end to use Kai footage for flashbacks I couldn't disagree more. That to me was extreme attention to detail. In Dragon Ball Z, Toei was always using previous stock footage for flashbacks whether it be Dragon Ball scenes or Dragon Ball Z themes, except for Vegeta's speech when Goku fought Original Boo. I think it's brilliant marketing because I know when I would see that old footage I'd want to go out and buy those episodes to see what happened.
Also, I must disagree with your commentary on Jōji Yanami. He's always played Kaiō-sama more subdued than the art. In particular when he yells at Goku not to fight Freeza when Goku is on his way to Namek. In that scene the art is way more intense than the line deliveries. Sure his age may be showing (a bit) but I think you were being overly critical.

While I'd still prefer for them to reanimate the scenes for consistency's sake (hell, they had half of the first episode's flashback content reanimated already for Ultimate Tenkaichi and BOG's special edition), I'd be less against them using Kai footage for flashbacks if Kai's Buu Arc footage didn't suck. It really sticks out like a sore thumb, especially with the damn green tint.

This was another great podcast. I like listening to these on youtube when I'm working out or playing video games. It's also how I found this site. I can't wait for the next one because there's so much to talk about right now!
Re: Episode #0384 (12 July 2015)
Great episode, guys. I'm glad I finally got around to listening to it. Concerning the half-serious comments you guys made about financing your efforts, would you ever consider holding a Patreon? It's a crowd-funding platform for content-creators, and think Kanzenshuu would fit it nicely. If you want an example of what one looks like, here's one for a comic book reviewer I follow. Patrons contribute monthly dollar amounts, and you can set milestones goals for what you'll be able to do if you make a certain amount.

Well aware of what Patreon is, but thanks .
It's another one of those things where there's no way on Earth we could commit to a "schedule" for "content" here on the site among the four of us, most especially not to the point of it making any financial sense for ANY of the four of us to abandon our current day-jobs to focus in on that. Crazy as it sounds: "mo money, mo problems" in this case.

The podcast is weekly (when we can make it weekly) and it gets uploaded when it's ready. I can't ever give any more information than that, because there's generally no more information to give.SaiyaSith wrote:Any idea when you'll upload the next podcast? #Excited
