Dragon Ball Kanzenban Release

In 2002, Japan experienced a revival of the once forgotten Dragon Ball series. Due to this resurgence of interest in the series, on 04 December 2002, Shueisha began to re-release the original tankōbon in a complete 完全版 (kanzenban, or “Perfect Edition”) format. The kanzenban release condensed the original 42 volumes into 34, with each volume containing approximately 15 chapters. Unlike the tankōbon, the kanzenban retained all of the colored pages originally printed in Weekly Shōnen Jump. The kanzenban are also slightly larger in size than the tankōbon, although are still smaller than the original Weekly Shōnen Jump magazines.

As a special treat, the kanzenban volumes featured restored artwork and newly drawn cover illustrations by Akira Toriyama. Each volume also featured an insert poster of its respective volume’s cover illustration. Every other first-edition volume of the kanzenban release also came with a “Dragon Ball Children” insert pamphlet featuring tribute images of the Dragon Ball world, as seen through the eyes of current hugely-popular manga artists in Japan who were children while the series was being released. The pamphlets also included short articles where these artists related how Akira Toriyama had influenced their own work. The first ten of these seventeen pamphlets were later reprinted in the first companion guide, “Dragon Ball Landmark”, but the entirety of them are available in our “Translations” section.
