Video Game Soundtracks

Video game music is a big thing in Japan with nearly every game receiving at least one soundtrack, traditionally in either an “original” or “arranged” soundtrack version.

  • An original soundtrack will have the music exactly as heard in the game (if it is a 16-bit game, you will hear 16-bit music on the original soundtrack). These have become less prevalent as game (and thus game soundtrack) production values and technology have allowed for composers to create music as it was perhaps originally intended or envisioned without the limitations of sound hardware in older consoles.
  • An arranged soundtrack will traditionally have re-recorded (or perhaps remixed) music to take full advantage of the digital/lossless format

Nearly all early Dragon Ball game soundtracks are arranged. Furthermore, all games with a vocal opening theme song typically receive a CD single with a full version of its respective song. Be sure to check out the full “CD Singles” page for more information on these and other releases:

General Information

  • All tracks composed by Kenji Yamamoto
  • Whereas the Japanese version of the game contained newly-synthesized versions of music from the original anime TV series and movies, international releases featured a replacement soundtrack (which, in return back over in the Japanese version, could be unlocked as an alternative soundtrack)
  • In conjunction with the removal and replacement of the musical score in Dragon Ball Kai, the release of this game soundtrack was canceled before its proper release. A few copies that had already been sent out to other composers and reviewers have since made their way into the hands of collectors, and as such (despite being an officially “unreleased” album), we have cataloged it here.
