Shueisha’s official listing for the “Chōzenshū #1: Story & World Guide” was recently updated with a few alterations from its original listing back in December. While the price point remains the same at ¥2,200, the release date has been slightly adjusted by one day and is now set to be released 05 February 2013. If you have already pre-ordered the guide, fret not, because you will still be getting it first thing in February. This change could be tied to the fact that the first three “Full Color Comics” were set to be released on the same day, although they still really have not spread out the releases too much from one another.

You will also note that the guide’s author has been updated, going from the standard Akira Toriyama listing under the Jump Comics moniker to being published under V-Jump as a “Favorite Printing Comics”. This is only significant because many fans, including ourselves, have speculated that the Chōzenshū may merely be condensed reprints of the Daizenshuu volumes. However, V-Jump had nothing to do with their release, though V-Jump is of course also just a subsidiary of Shueisha. To make it even stranger, the first Chōzenshū volume has now been assigned a new ISBN (978-4-08-782496-4), which is something you do not often see.

We will be sure to keep you updated with any new developments as we quickly approach the release date!

Online retailer CDJapan recently updated their listings with an entry for FLOW’s upcoming “CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA” CD single. The listing notes that the first-run pressings of the release will come packaged with a digipak cover featuring an illustration of Dragon Ball. There is no word on what this illustration will be or who will draw it, so we will just have to stay tuned!

The release will actually be a “double A-side” single that is set to contain the aforementioned song — which will be used as the main theme for March’s Battle of Gods theatrical release — along with a still as-of-yet-untitled insert song. The CD single (KSCL-2209) releases in Japan 20 March 2013 for ¥1350.

Previous tie-ins with bands and Dragon Ball illustrations have included Team Dragon (from AKB48)’s various editions of the “Kokoro no Hane” CD single, as well as Ayumi Hamasaki’s “Rule” (the main theme to the live-action film Dragon Ball Evolution) CD single which came packed with an exclusive drawing of the singer by original manga author Akira Toriyama along with a poster of the singer from the CD single’s normal cover art.

2012 has come to an end and 2013 is upon us. Last year was one of the most exciting years for the Dragon Ball franchise that we have ever had, and 2013 is already shaping up to be quite the contender itself. Every year we like to reflect on the biggest news stories, check in on the predictions we made a year ago, and made equally-hysterical predictions for the upcoming year. Having completed fusion last April, we are stuck with even more opinions and predictions to toss into the mix, all in addition to what you crazy fans out there always contribute. Be sure to tune in — you cannot know where you are going unless you understand where you have been!

SHOW DESCRIPTION:
Episode #0320! VegettoEX, Hujio, Julian, and Meri all reflect on 2012’s biggest Dragon Ball news stories. The second half of the year was obviously a big one, but some of the earlier news stories were just as fun. What were some of the biggest trends and surprises? How did our predictions line up with reality, and what do we all collectively as fandom see in our future for 2013?

At New York Comic-Con 2012 back in October, Viz Media noted plans to release new “3-in-1 omnibus editions” of the Dragon Ball manga starting in June 2013, but no further details were available. At the time, this re-release sounded confusing due to the “Viz Big” edition of the manga — also 3-in-1 volumes printed on higher-quality paper and with most of its respective color chapters intact — still being readily available at retailers.

Just this month, the special Shonen Jump Alpha Yearbook 2013 contained a “Creator Spotlight” on Akira Toriyama. The spotlight (image courtesy of our forum user the original ero-sennin) promoted a “new 3-in-1 edition” of the Dragon Ball manga planned for release beginning Summer 2013, which lined up with the Comic-Con announcement.

sja_db_3in1_announcement

Viz had released specially-branded “3-in-1” versions of certain series before, combining volumes together into one book on lower-quality paper than their standard “Graphic Novel” paper, though printed at the same size (roughly 5 x 7.5 inches — for comparison’s sake, the “Viz Big” versions of Dragon Ball are roughly 8.6 x 5.8 inches). Both One Piece and Bleach — neither of which had previously received a “Viz Big” version — had seen these repackagings trickle out. One Piece in particular never made it past the East Blue arc, ending its fourth “3-in-1” with volumes 10, 11, and 12 together in one book back in May 2010. That is set to change next month with a new “3-in-1” picking up with the Baroque Works arc and volumes 13, 14, and 15.

Amazon recently listed both Volume 1 (set for release 04 June 2013) and Volume 2 (set for release 03 September 2013) of the new Dragon Ball “3-in-1” editions, putting both at the 5 x 7.5 inches size.

Kanzenshuu has been able to confirm with Viz that these new editions of the Dragon Ball manga are the same type of “3-in-1” editions that One Piece has received (and will be continuing with). MSRP for these editions is $14.99, as opposed to the “Viz Big” editions which retail for $17.99. The “Viz Big” editions will still be kept in print and on the market — alongside these new “3-in-1” editions — with the collectors in mind.

One of the most helpful sections of our weekly podcast has always been the “Releases” segment where we cover that month’s upcoming products coming out across the world. We backed off the segment quite a bit as 2012 came to a close, mostly because it seemed as if merchandise — not completely, but for the most part — was trickling down to a crawl.

Not so with 2013!

To bring everyone back up to speed, here is a quick overview of some of the products we already have confirmed for an early 2013 release. Each product will have as many links as we can provide for all you global fans to get your money flowing. Where applicable, we will include referral links to vendors that we at Kanzenshuu have worked with in the past and have a good relationship with — if you want to support both your favorite franchise as well as your favorite website for that franchise, clicking away and buying is a great way to do so!

Please note that some items do not have an official release date announced just yet — additional products like Project Versus J on the PlayStation 3 & Vita will make their way into the schedule eventually, as well as any additional Battle of Gods merchandise that gets pumped out the door. For now, these are the confirmed items up through the end of March. As always, let us know if you foreign folks have anything else coming your way that we can add to the list.

The Japanese band FLOW has announced a 20 March 2013 release date for a CD single containing their new version of the classic Dragon Ball Z theme song “CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA” which will be used as the main theme for the upcoming movie Battle of Gods. The CD will be a “double A-side” release, which means that both “CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA” and another included song — an insert song for the movie — are considered high-enough profile to be promoted and released at the same time.

2012 has been one of the most exciting years to be a Dragon Ball fan, no matter where in the world you live. Every single type of news story — from the controversial to the heart-warming to the completely banal — has come and gone over the last 365 days. We merged Daizenshuu EX and Kanzentai back on April 1st and have been able to cover the news even better than we already were beforehand (not that any of us were deficient before, or anything…). We have been so incredibly proud to share this ride with you and bring you the best coverage, the most accurate translations, the most original features and guides… and we plan on bringing you far more in 2013.

That all being said, let us take a look back at 2012. These were the top five stories of the year according to total website traffic, rate of traffic growth, social media conversations, etc. If all five of these stories seem recent to you, that is because they are — these stories from just the last couple months completely blew everything else out of the water from the entire rest of the year!

#5: December 5th — New Crossover Video Game Announced: “Project Versus J”
The last year brought what most felt was a snooze-fest of video game announcements — between Dragon Ball Z for Kinect (a motion-control re-skin of a re-skin) alongside Dragon Ball Z Budokai HD Collection (a mostly-competent release with a replacement soundtrack and a missing game), expectations were low for 2013. When the first page showcasing Project Versus J found its way to fandoms far and wide, it was clear that excitement was once again in the air.

#4: November 10th — New 2013 Dragon Ball Z Movie Title: “Battle of Gods”?
There are leaks, and then there are leaks. In what turned out to be an in-progress version of the eventual poster for the upcoming 2013 movie, we learned the title of the movie (“Battle of Gods”) and caught our first glimpses of two new characters, who themselves would later be revealed as “Uisu” and “Birusu”, the God of Destruction. Fans argued whether it was a cat or a bunny or a jackal (and most importantly of all, why on Earth Gohan was a Super Saiyan?!), but one thing was for sure — this was going to be crazy.

#3: July 10th — New 2013 Dragon Ball Movie First Details
After the countdown website revealed that a new Dragon Ball movie was on the way, fans were salivating for the first bits of any real information. When Jump came out with a two-page spread detailing Tadayoshi Yamamuro’s involvement with the animation, as well as Akira Toriyama’s own personal statement about his involvement with the movie, it seemed like things could not possibly get any better.

#2: July 27th — New Dragon Ball Z 2013 Movie Teaser
It did not yet have a name, but when the short teaser trailer for what would become Battle of Gods debuted on Fuji TV this past summer, the Internet exploded with enthusiasm. All it took was a sweeping shot into a smiling Goku for everyone’s excitement to reach new levels.

top5_1-kai_continues

#1: November 6th — Dragon Ball Kai is Set to Continue… but Not in Japan
Dragon Ball Kai has always been an interesting monster for us to cover. It was pretty much an unprecedented type of experiment: bring back the exact same version of a show, not reanimated, but edited down with an all-new musical score. The Japanese audience reacted to it with near total apathy, but the international markets seemed insatiable. When the seemingly-failed-experiment came to a seemingly-premature close with the Cell story arc, many fans were left wanting more. Toshio Furukawa’s teaser photograph and Mayumi Tanaka’s blog post unceremoniously announcing the continuation into the Majin Boo story arc nearly sent fans into convulsions with excitement.

Cheers, 2012! Here’s to an equally-amazing 2013.

The upcoming new series of “Chōzenshū” guide books revealed in the February 2013 issue of V-Jump has so far been a mystery. Other than being a series of books that would “tell everything about Dragon Ball“, we had very little to go on.

They are still mostly a mystery, but Amazon Japan gives us at least a tiny bit more to latch onto with a title for the first volume due out 04 February 2013 (alongside the first batch of new “Full Color Comics”): “STORY & WORLD GUIDE” with a list price of ¥2,200.

The title hearkens back to the titles of two information-packed “Daizenshuu” guide books from the mid-90s: number two (“Story Guide”) and number four (“World Guide”).

No cover art or listings for further volumes appear to be available just yet, but at least this guide book and the first three volumes of the “Full Color Comics” version of the Saiyan arc (seemingly priced at ¥630 a pop) should start making the pre-order rounds.

UPDATE: Shueisha’s official listing for the “Story & World Guide” notes that it will be a size B5 book, meaning it will be the same size as the Daizenshuu from the mid 1990s — all of the more recent guide books have been a smaller size.
