CyberConnect2 CEO Hiroshi Matsuyama announced today at New York Comic-Con (during a live stream at the ShiftyLook Live Stage) that the upcoming (March 2013) Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 will contain a bonus Son Goku oufit:

…as a day-one order first edition kind of bonus, you will receive a DLC key for Naruto with a Son Goku from Dragon Ball Z costume.

The full stream is available over at twitch.tv, with Naruto talk kicking into high gear around the 9:00 hour mark after a bit of Tales discussion. As this was only just specially announced at Comic-Con, there are no images available just yet — stay tuned in the near future, and they are sure to pop up!

Big thanks to Super Saiyan Prime and Jonathan for the heads-up and link, respectively!

UPDATE: The following image was provided by Namco-Bandai showcasing the costume.

Dragon Ball Z for Kinect officially launched in North America this week for the Xbox 360 (and obviously it requires the Kinect add-on). Tons of folks have been asking lots of great questions, and very few of them have been comprehensively answered in one shot. That is where we come in! Below you will find a quick overview of some of the most frequently asked questions we have seen. Stay tuned — hopefully this weekend — for our full review of the game.

Is there an opening video? New theme song?
No. The game goes straight to the main menu, and does not even have an attract mode — it just sits there.

Which languages are included?
There is a default English language track and a selectable Japanese language track.

Do I need a Kinect to load the game? Even to watch Episode of Bardock?
Yes. The game will prompt you with a “This game requires a Kinect Sensor” message, though the game will continue to load through to the main menu in the background. Without plugging in a Kinect, you cannot actually access this menu.

Is Episode of Bardock available to watch immediately? Is it the full special?
Yes. The last menu option is “Special Movie”, which will immediately begin playing the special. It is the full 20 minute special, in high definition, complete with the ending credits (with no music) written in Japanese. Viewing the special does not unlock anything.

How are the subtitles on Episode of Bardock? Is there an English dub?
The subtitles are the expected mix of accurate translations mixed with the occasional English dub-isms (“Frieza”). “Chilled” is named properly as such. “Kuso” is translated as “Curses!” Episode of Bardock is presented exclusively in its original Japanese language subtitled in English. The subtitles are thin, white, and quasi-left-justified on screen a la Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans back on Raging Blast 2. For whatever reason, periods are still occasionally left off the end of sentences.

What do the QR codes included with the Goku hair hat unlock?
Super Saiyan Goku, Super Saiyan Trunks, Piccolo, Kaiō-Ken, and Guided Ki Blast.

Is this game really just Ultimate Blast/Tenkaichi repurposed with Kinect controls?
Yep. Pretty much. Same graphics, music, attack patterns, combos, etc.

Do the controls actually work?
Some better than others. For me so far, all of the basic moves (punches, ki blasts, etc.) have been working fine, but it completely fails to register my ki charging and bending forward/backward to dodge.

Is there any type of multiplayer?
No, there are no multiplayer modes either offline or online. There is only the single player story mode and single player score attack mode.

Is there any type of difficulty selection?
Yes. The game defaults to normal, but also includes easy and hard.

Do I have to wear the Goku hair hat while playing?
Yes. It is required by law.

Remember that this is just a quick look at the game and some of the most frequently asked questions leading up to its launch — it is not a full review. That is coming, though, both in written form and on the podcast. Stay tuned this week for more!

After the release of Ultimate Tenkaichi late last year, I made a promise to myself and all of you: my written review of Dragon Ball Kai: Ultimate Butōden for the Nintendo DS (originally released back in February 2011) would be posted before the franchise’s next video game was released.

Today sees the release of Dragon Ball Z for Kinect on the Xbox 360. We are prepping ourselves to dive in to that experience this week, and will bring you that review in the very near future. In the meantime…

I (barely) made it in time, but the full review of Dragon Ball Kai: Ultimate Butōden, the franchise’s swan-song on the Nintendo DS — a console that has treated it very well since 2005 — is now live.

For those of you who might like to dive into the past with the Butōden series of video games, check out Episode #0311 of our podcast.

While there won’t be any “Animation Styles Guide” update today, that doesn’t mean we won’t be leaving you without any new content at all! We’ve added dedicated pages for the two “Super Exciting Guide” volumes; the “Story Volume” and the “Character Volume”. Both volumes contain an interview with Akira Toriyama, and are based on the kanzenban release of the manga, similar to “Landmark” and “Forever”. As the name suggests, the “Story Volume” focuses heavily on the manga’s story development, including the main battles, training, and of course friendships. The “Character Volume” is very similar to both Daizenshuu 2 and 4, covering the main characters, the “Dragon World” and its many races, and many of the main techniques used throughout the series.

I’ve also been slowly working on porting over our “Complete Cast Listing” from Kanzentai, which as of this post is up through the letter “M”. So look forward to that being completed, and we’ll be back with even more content in the coming weeks!

The American-produced Dragon Ball Evolution live action movie is receiving its second reduced-price DVD reissue in Japan this holiday season. Originally released to home video in summer 2009, the first reissue (with changed cover art pulled from the North American / international releases) came 02 September 2010. This new reissue appears to be the exact same thing as the last one — same cover art, same price (¥1,419), same everything — and will drop 05 December 2012.

We reviewed the movie on our podcast immediately following its Japanese theatrical debut, then again after its North American debut, and even dived into the material to pull apart all of the fun differences and changes. What we have not done yet is actually review the Japanese dub of the movie (featuring such actors as Kappei Yamaguchi and Aya Hirano). The previous Japanese DVD reissue is sitting on my shelf — it may be time to crack that bad boy open…!

Back in June we received first word of an upcoming release of Dragon Ball Kai (under the quasi-international Dragon Ball Z Kai moniker) for France — the first set would span episodes 1-54 (wrapping up the Saiyan and Freeza arcs) over nine DVDs.

Our buddy sangofe dropped us a note with info on its release yesterday, clarifying a few tidbits about its contents. The set does indeed contain the original Japanese version subtitled in French (alongside the new French dub) and is the cropped 16:9 version (similar to the DVD release in Japan, as opposed to the Japanese Blu-ray release which preserved the original 4:3 aspect ratio).

This first setSaga Des Saiyens & Saga De Freezer — dropped yesterday (02 October 2012) from AB Video for an MSRP of 59.95 €.

It’s yet another week, and making it just under the wire we have yet another new animator to highlight in the “Animation Styles Guide”. This week we detail the work of Toei Animation’s Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, who was an animation supervisor and character designer for the latter portion of Dragon Ball Z and for the entirety of Dragon Ball GT. Nakatsuru is most well known for his ability to duplicate Akira Toriyama’s artistic style, and for developing the character designs for Bardock’s crew and Super Saiyan 4 Son Goku! He is by far one of the “best of the best” Dragon Ball had to offer fans!

Enjoy, and look for more updates to our ever-growing “Animation Styles Guide” in the near future!

As we head forward into the Dragon Ball video game season for 2012, we thought it would be a great opportunity to also look back at what many consider to be one of the golden eras of DBZ gaming: the Butōden series. Launched in 1993 with Super Butōden on the Super Famicom, the series spanned three mainline games and a slew of spin-offs and upgrades. Our buddy Joe joins us for a walk down memory lane with the series as we attempt to figure out if they were just as much a yearly cash-in as we have seen in recent history, or if Super Butōden 2 really kinda is the greatest thing on the planet.

SHOW DESCRIPTION:
Episode #0311! VegettoEX and Hujio catch up on a couple weeks worth of news, specifically involving next year’s big new movie. Joe joins us for a trip down memory lane with the “Super Butoden” series as we attempt to figure out if it truly was a golden era of DBZ video gaming, if it was all the same type of cash-in we complain about these days, and if “Super Butoden 2” very specifically was the greatest DBZ game of all time. Your (hugely international!) thoughts on the game series wraps up our jam-packed episode!

If we could keep up with Dragon Ball Online — the seemingly-successful massively multiplayer online role-playing game that initially launched in Korea back in 2008 — we would! Thankfully we have a great bunch of community members that keep that drip of information goodness coming, which most recently includes this guy:

Thanks to our buddies HECTOR4 and TheDevilsCorpse, we know that this villain (or possibly series of villains?) appears to be a new type of Cell concoction courtesy of “Captain Bacterian” (who himself seems to be some sort of pirate villain, though we personally do not know his connected to the original series’ Bacterian from the 21st Tenka’ichi Budōkai). The image states:

Do you REMEMBER me? Cell’s descendants! Captain Bacterian’s true goals are being revealed.

All you Dragon Ball Online experts are free to drop some more tidbits our way — we welcome them!

With the upcoming Dragon Ball Z movie in Japan set to debut in March, a few fans have speculated whether FUNimation would possibly screen its trailer at the New York Comic Con on 14 October 2012 at 1:30 pm during their industry panel. The majority of these rumors stem from people misconstruing the description for FUNimation’s panel to imply that they would be screening or revealing some new Dragon Ball Z information (which it does not actually say):

Like Hetalia? Fullmetal Alchemist? Deadman Wonderland? Hellsing Ultimate? Dragon Ball Z? Then, methinks, you like FUNimation. Hear from one of America’s anime leaders about what’s next for them on Blu-ray and DVD, streaming, and television screens across the country.

The series listed in the description are some of FUNimation’s flagship properties, but nowhere in the description does it specifically say, nor even hint that, there will be new information or screenings of these said properties. We reached out to FUNimation to confirm the validity of these rumors and received the following response:

There is nothing new to report on DBZ and there will be no screenings pertaining to it.

So while it is now confirmed that this rumor is false, it unfortunately also means that there will not be any new Dragon Ball Z franchise information or related screenings from FUNimation coming out of New York Comic Con this year.
