Episode Summary

Part A

Glorio and the others are in shock: the airplane is gone!

Without a ship, they’re going to have to walk. Kaiōshin wonders if they’ll even be able to get back to Earth; Glorio says he’ll figure it out. Goku thinks it will be easy for them to travel if they just fly, but Glorio explains that since the air is so heavy, it’s draining to fly for an extended period of time. Goku gives it a try, and agrees. Kaiōshin says that running out of energy on their trip would be dangerous, so walking is indeed the right course of action for now.

The group hits a dead end: a massive cavern over top the Sea of Darkness. They’ll have to fly over it… but a winged-worm-like monster jumps out at them! Kaiōshin remarks that Goku’s reactions still aren’t up to snuff, so Glorio jumps in on the attack, dodging fire blasts and landing a punch square to the monster’s face. After more dodging and a spinning kick, the monster falls back down. Goku thinks Glorio is pretty good, and might even be stronger than Kaiōshin! (Kaiōshin thinks he’s a perfectly fine fighter.)

Goku is hungry and thirsty during the walk, but still manages to sense a giant troll’s attack before anyone else even sees it. Goku handily dispatches their attacker, and Glorio is confused: how did Goku even know it was there? Goku says it was his ki, but Glorio is unfamiliar with this term; Kaiōshin explains that Goku can sense someone’s energy without having to visually see them.

The group finally comes across a small building shaped like a tea kettle where they are able to get some food. The Rest Stop Lady first brings out some tea and a skewered lizard, which Goku thoroughly enjoys. The drink looks strange, though; it’s apparently an herb juice with honey, but looks like it has little eyeballs floating in it. Goku thinks it’s bitter, but the lady says it’s extremely healthy and the taste grows on you.

Kaiōshin gets back to business and reminds Glorio that he said they would find another vehicle somewhere. Glorio steps up to the register and inquires; the woman calls out her husband, who seems to be hard of hearing. The woman screams out that these folks are looking for a vehicle, and the man says they can sell him a Sky Seed for 8,000 dokuro. Glorio inquires about the distance, and the man says about 120 kilos for their group. Glorio claims it’s a bit pricey and pretends to walk off to try elsewhere, when suddenly the man rushes in and yells that they’ll take only 5,000! Seems he could hear perfectly fine the entire time. Glorio smirks.

Goku and Kaiōshin wander around the rest stop checking out the items for sale. They come across what seems to be a bunch of candy with dead bugs inside them all! The Rest Stop Lady explains the one Goku is holding is a Revive Bug; they do special things like restore your energy, so Goku equates them to Senzu (which the lady is completely unfamiliar with). There are all types of bugs: Achichi Bugs for burns, Zutsu Bugs for headaches, and Beaut Bugs to make your skin silky smooth! There’s also the Join Bug which can merge people together briefly with even more strength, which Goku calls out as just like Fusion! Goku calls over for “Goliro” (mistaking the name “Glorio”), saying he wants to buy some of these bugs. The Rest Stop Lady says it’s been a while since anyone bought souvenirs!

Outside Goku checks out his stash, thanking “Goliro” once again. The Rest Stop Gent urges them along to the Sky Seed boarding area. The old man goes through a wild routine welcoming them as the lady carts out the Sky Seed. It almost looks like a Q-Tip; Glorio says it’s the seed of a Great Fiend Flower, and Kaiōshin remarks it’s nothing like what he imagined. Glorio points the lady in the direction he wants to go, and they set things up for the gang. They’re urged to hop on, hold on, and keeps their heads down! The old man announces he’s removing the tail, counts down… and they blast off!

They fly off at great speed, and Kaiōshin wonders how Glorio is driving it. He’s not; it’s just flying. They’re going to fall, so get off before it crashes! As they start to descend over the Sea of Darkness and fly out of control, the gang all hop off!

Part B

The group has gained a fair distance, but still has half a day’s walk to go to the castle. Goku wants to fly the rest of the way, and if they run out of energy, they can eat one of the Revive Beans they bought! Kaiōshin and Glorio aren’t interested.

As they continue walking, Goku recalls that Piccolo mentioned the Demon Realm’s Dragon Balls — do they really have them here? Glorio confirms, and proposes that they are in fact the original Dragon Balls. Goku wants to know where to find them, but Glorio says everyone knows exactly where they are. There are three worlds in the Demon Realm, and they’re in the third right now; each world has a Dragon Ball there in a specific location guarded by one of the Tamagami. They’re incredibly strong, which gets Goku’s attention — you have to fight them to win their respective Dragon Ball. Kaiōshin does the math and figures you have to do that three times in order to get a wish granted. Goku thinks it’s neat how there are three Dragon Balls here (presumably instead of the seven he’s used to), and wants to get them! Glorio explains that, to his knowledge, no-one’s ever actually gathered all three and made a wish. That makes Goku want to try even more! Kaiōshin reminds him that they need to rescue Dende first. Goku wonders if the Tamagami are nearby, but Glorio says it’s in the opposite direction from where they arrived with Warp-sama. Goku thinks it through, and figures that they can make a wish on their way to rescue Dende to restore their adult bodies. Glorio thinks this might actually be worth doing. What happens if Dende is killed of they can’t find him? If they use the Dragon Balls to make a wish, they can rescue Dende and then return to normal with Earth’s Dragon Balls. Glorio and Kaiōshin stare each other down, and Kaiōshin ultimately relents.

Goku pops up on Nyoibō to get a view of where they’re heading, and spots the next town close by. Everyone’s ready to take a break. Goku runs in and stuffs his face in a water fountain for a drink (much to the chagrin of a fish). Kaiōshin worries whether it’s safe to drink or not, but Glorio supposes it’s fine. The group emerges from a tunnel to see a big commotion in town — the military police have rounded up all the citizens for their annual offerings.

One of the officers reminds them all that, with the death of the Supreme Demon King Dabra, King Gomah is now in charge. Apparently Gomah feels the offerings are too small, and has upped it to three gold coins per person. Anyone unable to make the offering will instead forfeit three years of their lifespan per coin, with the possibility of losing nine total years. One of the citizens says this is too cruel and attempts to run away, but the officer quickly pulls him back with his magic cane. Fleeing will cost another ten years!

Goku and the others watch on as the citizens are lined up to make their offerings. One can’t pay, so he is grabbed aside and collared with a strange device that pulls blue bubbles of goo into its container.

Goku wants to jump in, but Glorio thinks this would cause too much trouble. As another man pleas for his life, and Goku goes to jump in but is interrupted by a small masked figure with a Wasabi Bomb!… which fizzles out and does nothing. The little one tries to run away, gets caught, and busts out a taser. Caught again, Goku finally jumps into action, knocking the entire force aside with Nyoibō, giving the masked figure a chance to use the taser again and escape. Goku distracts them by knocking over items in the alleyway before handily dispatching them with his quick movements and Nyoibō skills. They all start shooting their canes as Goku runs along the rooftops, but none of this poses a problem, as Goku jumps back in and takes out the whole gang, directly hitting some and reflecting gun shots back at the others. Seems he went a little too far here!

The masked figure pulls them aside, and the entire gang escapes back out of town. From a rock above them, the masked figure asks who they are! She pulls her mask off to reveal a young demon girl…

Episode Notes

• Where as episodes 2 and 3 put the respective episode title overtop ongoing footage, episode 4 here falls in line with the very first episode with an actual title card again.
• The troll that Goku senses in this episode is the troll design from Akira Toriyama that was shown off during the 2024 New York Comic Con panel.
• Likewise, the military outfits from this episode are the design Toriyama drew his “Robotoriyama” self wearing to accompany last year’s series announcement and author comment.
• As with the previous episode, signs in this series appear to be slightly embellished, horizontally-flipped Japanese.

Character & Location Names

• Panzy (パンジ; panji)
  In line with other plant-based names in the series, “Panzy” takes her name from the “pansy” flower (パンジー; panjii), removing the elongation on the last syllable in the word. A spelling of “Panzy” approximates this adjustment to the base word; another possible and faithful spelling could be “Pansi” as well.

  Note that this exact name pun was previously used in the first Dragon Ball theatrical film for the main character Pansy (パンジ), who was voiced by the late Tomiko Suzuki. Based on historical interviews and documentation, Akira Toriyama had virtually no involvement with this film, and therefore it is assumed that this character was created without his direct involvement. It was also not uncommon throughout the franchise’s history for Toriyama to forget about characters, or name puns, that he had already established and try to reuse them.

Translation & Language

• When the rest stop lady serves Glorio and the others, she uses the term “menu” (メニュー; menyū) twice: once when serving the skewered lizard, and shortly thereafter when describing the herb juice. “Menu” in this context in Japanese can refer to the actual special item itself available for purchase, rather than, say, a literal paper menu of item selections to browse. As such, the official simulcast English translation flips between using “special dish” and “special menu” in the script.
• The “Sky Seed” Glorio and the gang use to travel is spoken aloud in Japanese using the English words “sky” and “seed” (スカイシード; sukai shiido).
• Various types of bugs are described by the Rest Stop Lady (note that all spellings are checked against and taken from the original Japanese broadcast’s closed captions, which may change in later versions and transcriptions)
  • These are all types of what the official simulcast English translation describes as “Medi Bugs” (薬虫; kusuri mushi), literally “medicine bugs”
  • The “Revive Bug” (復活虫; fukkatsu mushi) — literally “resurrection bug” — for restoring stamina
  • The “Achichi Bug” (アチチ虫; achichi mushi) — taking the phrase あちち as in “ouch!” or touching something hot — for burns
  • The “Zutsu Bug” (ズツー虫; zutsū mushi) — taking the word 頭痛 (zutsū) meaning “headache” — for headaches
  • The “Beau Bug” (美容虫; biyō mushi) — taking the word for “beauty” (美容; biyō) — for a skin product
  • The “Join Bug” (くっつき虫; kuttsuki mushi) — taking the word for to “stick” or “join” together (くっつ; kuttsu) — which when split and eaten by two people, can briefly join them together for a short time with even more power
• When describing the aforementioned “Join Bug,” the Rest Stop Lady uses the term 合体 (gattai) to refer to the “fusion” rather than the actual English word “fusion” (フュージョン; fyūjon). Goku then does actually use the English word “fusion.” While both terms are used for fusion in the Dragon Ball series, 合体 more often than not is used in reference alongside the Potara earring fusion.
• Glorio says the Sky Seed comes from what the official simulcast English translation adapts as “Great Fiend Flower” (大鬼花; ō-onibana)
• The military force in town is rendered in the official simulcast English translation as the “Gendarmerie”. This is spoken aloud by Glorio in Japanese as the 憲兵隊 (kempeitai) and by Kaiōshin simply as the 憲兵 (kempei). “Gendarmerie” is a French term for military force that the Japanese later modeled their own Kempeitai on. There are some fairly strong associations being made with this specific terminology.

Staff & Cast

• Kan Murakami makes his directorial debut with this episode, having previously served as assistant director for Super Dragon Ball Heroes and the first episode of Daima, as well as other various Toei series.
• Fairouz Ai joins the main cast as Panzy in her first Dragon Ball role. She is directly credited as “Panzy” by name in the end credits, despite no-one actually saying this name aloud in the episode, and “Masked Majin” (仮面の魔人; kamen no majin) used as a name/title before the series’ debut.
• Kazue Ikura plays the Rest Stop Lady in what may be her first Dragon Ball role.
• Yōhei Tadano plays the Rest Stop Gent in what may be his first Dragon Ball role.
• Tarō Yamaguchi plays one of the military police; he just played one of the demons in the last episode, and was previously Soldier #3 in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.
• Toshiya Chiba plays one of the military police; he was previously a slew of minor characters throughout the Dragon Ball Super television series.
• Shūki Imagawa plays one of the military police in what may be his first Dragon Ball role.
• Yasunao Sakai plays one of the military police; he was previously an assassin in Dragon Ball Super episode 95 and a solider in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.
• Shun Kimeda plays a demon in what might be his first Dragon Ball role.
• Ryō Yaginuma plays a demon in what might be his first Dragon Ball role.
• Kensuke Shimizu plays an old demon in what might be his first Dragon Ball role.

Animation Alterations

Various scenes were altered in composition, special effects, and/or for content between initial trailers and the final episode broadcast. These include (but are not limited to) the following scenes. The initial trailer scenes are shown below, which you can hover over to view the scene as it was eventually seen within the episode.

• The Rest Stop Gent’s big display is redrawn with approximately the same animation base and includes additional effects in the final episode.
  
• The trio’s falling descent after hopping off the Sky Seed has a much more complicated and finished background landscape.
  
• Goku’s cute little hop has entirely new rock background art composited underneath him, while Glorio’s boots have been adjusted and Kaiōshin himself is entirely redrawn.
  
• Panzy’s unmasking is slightly zoomed in, and once her face is actually visible, elements like her eyebrows and eyelashes have been raised and softened.
