Episode Summary

Opening

When seven magic Dragon Balls are collected and the password is recited, a dragon named Shenlong appears to grant the summoner any wish.

Son Goku is an incredible warrior who lived in the mountains as a child, searched for the Dragon Balls while going on many adventures, and grew into adulthood with his new friends.

One day a vicious battle race called the Saiyans arrived on Earth — it seems that Goku was himself a Saiyan that had been sent to Earth as an infant. Saiyans maintain a youthful body for much of their lives.

Throughout his life, Goku continued to face terrifying enemies and overcome these challenges to protect Earth. Now the Earth faces a new threat…

Part A

The military police start firing at the group, forcing them to fly away. Everyone manages to dodge the gunfire, but it’s relentless, and they’re starting to get surrounded. Glorio and Panzy fire back, while Goku deflects with Nyoibō. Goku gets a brief taze from the gunfire, and it actually manages to take him down. Glorio says that a direct shot would incapacitate him! Goku flies up and uses Nyoibō to start taking out military planes, but there are just so many of them. Vegeta is frustrated at this nonsense, saying none of this will work on a Saiyan like him — he jumps out and starts picking off the military members and planes one by one, until he likewise gets tazed and knocked to the ground. Goku wanders over and offers up a Revive Bug at Vegeta’s request, which brings him back to full strength. Dealing with all this in kid bodies sure is tough!

Watching back from his throne monitors, Gomah is excited to see that the kids appear to be no match for the military. He starts to run through the group: there’s the Namek from Earth, a brat from the Third Demon World, and another one that’s probably from the Third Demon World. Gomah leans in, squinting at the monitor… what’s that on this guy’s belt? They zoom in, and the buckle on his belt looks like the legendary Evil Third Eye!

Goku continues dodging gunfire and attacking the military, while everyone else fires from afar. At this point the military start retreating, realizing they’re no match. They’re clear to move ahead again, and the Tagamami is at Gomah’s palace nearby.

Over in the Oparu District, an officer notices Goku and the others flying in, and sounds the alarm.

Degesu says the Third Eye was lost long ago, but Gomah has seen it — the Demon King Abra had it on his forehead. It looked just like that! Degesu wonders if all eyes don’t look like that, but why would this random guy have it? Gomah orders Degesu to go get that belt and bring it to him, and to not let anyone know what he’s up to! How is Degesu supposed to actually accomplish this? He’s smart — figure it out!

In flashback footage, we learn that the Evil Third Eye is something that previous Demon Kings have worn on their foreheads, granting them great power. Whenever they needed such power, the king would use the eye. During King Abra’s reign, however, it was stolen and lost to the world.

Dabra conspires with a bug-like demon to distract the guards and have the eye stolen from the safe it’s stored in. Once it’s stolen, Dabra directs the demon to head to the Third Demon World, where it will be difficult to find. He provides a key, and says he’ll contact him later. The bug demon flies in and steals the eye, setting off an alarm. He’s able to escape his pursuers to the Second Demon World, but a kraken appears to knocks him to the Third Demon World through the open tunnel. He lands intact with the eye, but a giant monster appears and cracks him dead, knocking the eye down off a cliff. The monster smashes the communicator that Dabra is calling into, but at this point the Third Eye is gone, so it’s no longer an issue.

Without the Third Eye, Abra fell to his son Dabra. However, after this point, he was eventually defeated by Majin Boo, and then the throne was passed on to Gomah.

Some time later, Hybis found the eye sitting on the ground, and placed it into his belt buckle.

Back in the present, Goku and the others arrive outside Gomah’s palace. Military police start running in from all corners, opening fire on the group.

Part B

The gunfire starts setting bushes ablaze as Goku and the others try to escape. Up above, a young demon looks down from a window and sees a kid with round ears! Goku wonders if Neva couldn’t do something, since he made that shield before. He says he’s just an old man, though — he’s only here to help them with their wish, and they need to figure it out for themselves.

Hybis is off in his own world (distracted by a small rock), when an attractive young demon lady approaches him. She loves his belt, and will give him a kiss in exchange for it. Hybis doesn’t want that at all… but he’ll trade it for her hat. It’s a deal! What a cool hat! The demon lady thinks that went well, but she’s a little insulted.

Piccolo reflects on their situation, and thinks that since he can regenerate, he’ll go in and take them all on! Goku thinks that’s a fine idea; they’ll run out of ammunition eventually. Neva says not to bother, though, since even if he can regenerate, if he takes one hit to a vital region it’s all over. Panzy adds on that these guns can probably shoot for ten days straight.

As Koo and Doo sleep soundly on the couch, Doctor Arinsu thinks to herself that everything is going according to plan.

Goku is sick of waiting, so he, Piccolo, and Vegeta jump back in to fight. Each of them start taking out multiple military members, when suddenly a large sound crashes in behind the smoke. It’s a group of giant laser tanks! They fire at the ground, which tazes and incapacitates Goku and the others for a brief moment. More cannons start their charge, and just as one is about to fire, something drops down from above to knock the cannon off its mark. More and more items drop out of the sky: it’s King Kadan and his army, here to provide support! They take out another tank, but then get shot at themselves. Down below, the group (somehow) emerges unscathed from the smoke, ready to continue the fight. The king and his army charge in, with Goku and the others in tow. The tide of this fight has turned in favor of our heroes! Goku turns Super Saiyan and unleashes an even larger series of attacks on the military, blowing them to smitherines.

Gomah watches the monitor in horror. Degesu stammers that they still have the Special Force…!

Goku says the king and his gang are pretty impressive!

Next Time:
“Degesu”

Episode Notes

  • Keeping up with the series’ ongoing inconsistency between formal episode title cards and titles written in the lower corner overtop footage, episode 15 overlays the title atop footage.

Character & Location Names

  • Oparu District (オパル地区; oparu chiku)
The “Oparu District” (as it’s spelled in the official simulcast English translation) might possibly be named for “opal” (オパール; opāru), referring to the gem. This is perhaps putting “rocks” here in the First Demon World in contrast with the “flowers” of the Third Demon Realm.

Translation & Language

  • The titular “Third Eye” is the subject of several conversations this episode. Since the series began, the “Evil Third Eye” mentioned by Degesu and Gomah is spoken aloud in Japanese and spelled in the closed captions as 魔のサードアイ (ma no sādo ai), with “Third Eye” being English words; it is also referred to as the “Legendary Third Eye” (伝説の第3の目; densetsu no dai san no me). The official simulcast English subtitle translation continues to throw in the phrase “Tertiary Oculus” — perhaps this was a way of avoiding the repetition of saying “Third Eye” again so soon, but there is no basis for this elaboration in Japanese, and “tertiary” in English doesn’t just mean “third” (it means “third in rank” or “third-degree”). If dead-set on Latin, perhaps “Oculus Tertius” would work.
  • Narration refers to Gomah’s rank below Dabra as “Vice Demon King” (副大魔王; fuku daimaō).
  • 計画 (keikaku) means “plan”.

Staff & Cast

  • Akio Ōtsuka finally makes his Dragon Ball franchise debut providing the “Third Eye Narration” over flashback footage. His father, Chikao Ōtsuka (who passed away in 2015), was the original voice actor for T’ao Paipai.
  • Ryūzaburō Ōtomo returns as the original (and thus far only) voice of Dabra. Following the passing of several colleagues, Ōtomo has taken on other roles in the series, including Shenlong.
  • Yukiyo Fujii plays the “Beautiful Woman in the Strange Hat” who approaches Hybis. Fujii previously played Haru (a child from Future Trunks’ timeline) during the Goku Black story arc of Dragon Ball Super, as well as other miscellaneous roles (including a ghost in Dragon Ball Kai).
  • Though they had all previously appeared on screen, King Kadan’s army members receive full names and voice credits for the first time.
