The Dragon Ball Super manga series debuted in the August 2015 issue of V-Jump on 20 June 2015, two weeks prior to the Dragon Ball Super TV series’ debut. The manga series is written and illustrated by Toyotarō with supervision and guidance from original Dragon Ball author Akira Toriyama. Each month a new chapter of the series is published in V-Jump. The series began with chapters running anywhere from roughly 15 to 30 pages, but eventually settled into 45 pages per chapter. Chapters are primarily produced in black and white, with very few color pages.
Beginning in April 2016, these monthly chapters began to be compiled into separate volumes called tankōbon (単行本; “separate volume”). In most English-speaking countries, the tankōbon are referred to as “graphic novels”, while most people in Japan simply refer to them as “komikkusu” (コミックス), taken from the English word “comics”. With the inconsistent page count for the series’ initial chapters, the first three volumes each contain varying amounts of chapters, whereas each volume thereafter contains exactly four chapters. Each volume, including both print and digital releases, are available in a grayscale format only. Shueisha also initially staggered the releases of print and digital editions, however as of the fourth volume both receive simultaneous releases.
Separate colorized editions of the tankōbon began a digital-only release 02 May 2016 in Japan, staggering behind the original monochrome print editions.
