Chapter Synopsis

Goku asks who they are, as Oolong begins to get worried. Yamcha and Pu’er introduce themselves as the hyena’s that have made the desert their headquarters. Yamcha wants them to hand over their money and capsules, and then Oolong recognizes Pu’er. Pu’er also recognizes Oolong as the etchi (pervert) who got kicked out of Southern Transformation Kindergarten for taking the teacher’s underwear. Also, Oolong used to pick on Pu’er. The two of them start arguing, and then Yamcha tells them to hurry up and hand over their stuff. Oolong asks Goku if he’s strong, and Goku says yeah, and so Oolong tells them that Goku can beat them. Yamcha pulls out his sword, and Oolong tells Goku to handle it, but he doesn’t understand why he’s supposed to fight this guy. Oolong yells that he’s a bad guy and plans to kill them. Goku asks Yamcha why he wants to kill them, as Oolong hides under the rock formation where Bulma’s napping.

Yamcha starts swinging at Goku with his sword, but Goku manages to dodge him. Goku, in mid-air, pulls out the Nyoi-Bō, and comes down, clashing weapons with Yamcha. They break, and Goku calls out “Extend, Bō!!!” and Yamcha takes a shot to the gut. Pu’er is worried about Yamcha-sama, and Oolong is impressed that Goku really is strong. Yamcha asks about Nyoi-Bō, and Goku explains he got it from his dead grandpa. Yamcha only knows one person who has an expanding Nyoi-Bō, and asks what Goku’s grandfather’s name was. Goku says that his grandpa was Son Gohan! Yamcha’s heard of him, as has Oolong, and Yamcha thinks this is the best fight he’s had in a while. Yamcha then uses his Rōga Fū-Fū Ken, and Goku takes a beating, and crashes into a rock formation.

Oolong decides to escape, so he turns into a fly, but Pu’er turns into a flyswatter and swats him down. Yamcha tells the pig to hand over his valuables, and Oolong pulls out a big M-size capsule. Goku recovers from amongst the rubble, complaining about being hungry, and challenges Yamcha to fight further. The two exchange a few punches with a Jan-Ken Gū, until Goku pokes his eyes and whacks him into a rock formation. Yamcha rushes at him again, and Goku feels like he’s going to pass out from hunger, when suddenly, Bulma wakes up. Yamcha spots her, and stops dead in his tracks and falls down. He and Pu’er get back on the Jet Momonga and ride away, and Bulma asks about that handsome guy. Back at their hideout, Yamcha swears he’ll get over his fear of women.

Chapter Notes

  • Each issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump featured short comments from the various series’ authors, giving fans a brief insight into their current thoughts, ranging from series-related announcements to trivial happenings in their personal lives. Akira Toriyama’s comments from this issue were:
    仲間とじじくさく温泉へ でもお湯が熱すぎてゆでだこみたいになっちゃった<明>

My buddies and I visited a hot spring, like the old farts that we are. But the water was way too hot, so we ended up like boiled eggs. <Akira>

Page Breakdown

The majority of the Dragon Ball series was drawn in black and white, but chapters were occasionally published with color pages. This breakdown notes how many full-color, limited-color, and black-and-white pages appeared in this chapter. As the tankōbon volumes were not released with these colors intact, any color pages shown are taken from the kanzenban release.
