Chapter Synopsis

Gohan says he needs to get his reflexes back up to speed as he piles some rocks together. He tells Goten to throw the rocks at him from this line, and Goten agrees, as Gohan positions himself. Goten thinks this is awfully close, but Gohan insists that the shorter the distance, the better. Goten thinks he’ll get hurt, but Gohan insists it’s okay and tells him to throw it hard. Goten throws it very hard, and Gohan just barely dodges it. The rock goes crashing through the mountain behind Gohan. Goten thinks that was awesome and that “Big Brother” did great, while Gohan is speechless. Goten prepares to throw more, but Gohan tells him to hold up, as he makes a new line farther back. Goten then resumes throwing the rocks, and Gohan dodges them with ease.

Goten then stops throwing and asks if he can be like him, but Gohan doesn’t understand. The ‘Super Saiyan’ thing. Gohan laughs and says that it requires lots of training, plus anger and stuff… Goten suddenly turns Super Saiyan, and Gohan’s jaw drops. Gohan asks how long he’s been able to do that, but Goten doesn’t remember. Gohan can’t believe this, after all the trouble he and their father went through to become Super Saiyan. Gohan says they can spar now, and asks Goten if he knows about that. “Yep! While big brother was studying, mother taught me.” He says she saw him turn Super Saiyan once, and got mad because it was bad. Goten then comes at Gohan with a kick, punch, and a lot more hits, all of which Gohan blocks. Gohan ends up in the air, while Goten stays on the ground, because he can’t fly. Gohan thinks it’s weird that he’s become a Super Saiyan already without being able to fly.

A plane then flies by, and Gohan recognizes it as Videl’s. Gohan realizes that in addition to her, now he has another person to teach to fly. He lands and tells Goten not to show off his strength too much to this girl from his school, especially not Super Saiyan. The two of them run back to the house through the woods, with Goten saying how awesome Gohan was at dodging the rocks. Gohan says Goten has amazing fighting talent, and if he trains, he can maybe enter the Tenka’ichi Budōkai as well. Goten says Trunks is stronger though, at least when they play fight. Gohan worries that the youngsters will quickly pass him up.

Back at the house, Chi-Chi thinks Videl has come looking for a date just as Gohan and Goten arrive. Videl says she looked him up to find his address and asks Gohan about his absence from school, since he was supposed to be teaching her to fly. Gohan says he will, and explains the situation to his mother — that he learned about the Budōkai through Videl and promised to teach her Bukūjutsu. Chi-Chi tells her not to do anything “naughty” to Gohan as thanks, and Videl angrily grits her teeth and says she doesn’t intend to. Gohan nervously says he just wanted to train quietly…

Chapter Notes

  • Each issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump features short comments from the various series’ authors, giving fans a brief insight into their current thoughts, ranging from series-related announcements to trivial happenings in their personal lives. Akira Toriyama’s comments from this issue were:
    夏に家族が海外旅行を計画中こういうのってパンフレット集めの時期が一番面白いよね <明>

My family is planning to travel overseas this summer. For this sort of thing, the part where you’re collecting all the brochures is the most fun. <Akira>

Page Breakdown

The majority of the Dragon Ball series was drawn in black and white, but chapters were occasionally published with color pages. This breakdown notes how many full-color, limited-color, and black-and-white pages appeared in this chapter. As the tankōbon volumes were not released with these colors intact, any color pages shown are taken from the kanzenban release.
