Jaco the Galactic Patrolman

In July 2013, an 11-chapter new series from Akira Toriyama began publication from Shueisha with simultaneous worldwide distribution in English from Viz Media, running from the 2013 #33–44 issues of Weekly Shōnen Jump (print-only in Japanese, digital-only in English). “Jaco the Galactic Patrolman” (銀河パトロールジャコ; Ginga Patorōru Jako) was teased as having possible connections with Dragon Ball, and was soon-after described as the “shocking revival of Dragon Ball!!”

During the month of August 2013, the Jump LIVE! app for iOS and Android provided free-to-read digital versions of the chapters every Monday (for example, Chapter 1 arrived in the app on 05 August, as Chapter 4 was released in print). Accompanying Chapters 1 and 2 were bonus paid content in the form of special, lengthy comments from author Akira Toriyama about the development and production of the new series. Both author commentaries can be found in our “Translations” section (Comments #1 / Comments #2).

In early 2014, Shueisha produced a four-installment “Vomic” (“Voiced Comic”) covering the first two chapters of Jaco the Galactic Patrolman. Tsubasa Yonaga and Issei Futamata were cast as Jaco and Omori, respectively.

A collected edition of the manga was released Japan 04 April 2014 in both regular (tankōbon-sized) and “Super Elite” (kanzenban-sized) editions. A digital collected version was released 04 July 2014. Viz released the collected edition in English (both in print and in digital form) in January 2015.

A complete breakdown of all eleven chapters as well as the “Dragon Ball Minus” bonus chapter from the collected edition, each including detailed notes (name puns, in-jokes/references, etc.), can be found below.
