Episode Summary

Now fully enraged, Vegeta charges Beerus, unleashing a volley of punches. Beerus easily blocks them all, but Vegeta catches Beerus off-guard and sends him flying off of the ship. The two continue fighting in the surrounding sea, exchanging blows. However, even after Vegeta nails Beerus head-on with his Galic Cannon, Beerus still remains unharmed. He comments that Vegeta is too weak to be Super Saiyan God, but at least fighting him was more fun than his fight with Goku. Beerus is about to charge up an attack to destroy Earth, but hesitates, thinking that it will be a shame to destroy a planet with such great food. When Bulma says that there is still plenty more food, Beerus decides to give them a chance.

Meanwhile, the Pilaf Gang is back in their row boat (which they grabbed out of the garbage) and are frantically rowing away from the cruise ship to escape the battle. Shuu and Mai are upset about abandoning so much food, not to mention the Dragon Balls, but Pilaf insists. Back on the cruise ship, Beerus calls out the “pink pig” Oolong. He thinks Oolong must be the same species as that other fat pink pig (Boo) who would not give him pudding, and challenges him to a game of rock-paper-scissors (jan-ken). If Oolong wins, Beerus promises to peacefully leave the planet. Oolong takes a bit of persuading from the others, but in the end he faces off with Beerus, and the two throw down their hands.

As it turns out, both throw out scissors. It is a tie! Beerus accuses Oolong of cheating, but Oolong retorts that if he had cheated, it would hardly have ended up as a tie. They go once more, but both once more throw out scissors. Bulma seductively promises Oolong anything he wants if he wins. Oolong and Beerus pump themselves up for another round, and Oolong throws scissors again, but Beerus throws rock. Beerus wins! Pu’er chews Oolong out for throwing scissors three times in a row. Beerus flies up into the air and begins forming a massive energy ball, but at the last moment a voice calls out for him to wait. It is Son Goku!

Goku wishes Bulma a happy birthday and apologizes for not bringing her a present, but makes her angry when he asks how old she is. Even though Beerus won at rock-paper-scissors, Goku insists that he hold off on destroying the Earth for a little bit longer, so that he can get to the bottom of this mystery surrounding Super Saiyan God. Beerus agrees to wait and disperses his energy ball. However, this is their very last chance and if Super Saiyan God does not pan out, he will destroy not only Earth, but the entire solar system. Goku asks Bulma if they can use the Dragon Balls stored on board, which makes Vegeta realize Goku must have been around watching events all along. Bulma agrees, so long as Goku teaches that big idiot a lesson for ruining her birthday party. Goku tells her to talk about Beerus more respectfully, since after all he is the most powerful God of Destruction in the universe. Bulma is shocked to discover Beerus’ true identity.

Next Time:
“Sorry About the Wait, Beerus-sama — Finally, Super Saiyan God is Born!”

Episode Notes

  • Oolong and Beerus’ game of rock-paper-scissors to decide the fate of Earth first appeared in the special extended version of Battle of Gods. In that version however, Yamcha advises Oolong that Beerus most likely selected him as his opponent because he believed that Oolong, being a pig, would be unable to form anything besides “scissors” with his hands, and Beerus will therefore undoubtedly go with “rock”. But since Oolong has fully humanoid hands, Yamcha advises him to throw “paper” to defeat Beerus. Oolong follows Yamcha’s advice, but Beerus unexpectedly throws “scissors”, winning the game. Beerus then nonchalantly explains that he overheard Yamcha and Oolong’s strategy. In contrast, in this episode Beerus selects Oolong because he mistakenly assumes that he is the same species as Majin Boo, and Yamcha gives Oolong no advice. In fact, in this version Oolong ends up throwing “scissors” three times in a row, which is exactly what Yamcha told him to avoid in the movie version. The gag in Battle of Gods was in keeping with various other gags seen throughout Dr. Slump and various other works by Akira Toriyama where crabs and other such animals are unable (or assumed to be unable) to use anything besides “scissors” in games of rock-paper-scissors.
  • After defeating Vegeta, Beerus comments that it is the first time in a long while that he has fought at 10% of his full effort. This mirrors Whis’ line at the end of Battle of Gods where he says it has been a long time since Beerus used 70% of his full power in a fight (in this case, fighting against Super Saiyan God Goku). Beerus also comments that fighting Vegeta was more fun than his fight with “that Saiyan at Kaiō’s planet” (i.e. Goku). Both this line and the 10% line imply that Vegeta becomes stronger than Goku after becoming enraged over Beerus slapping Bulma. In Battle of Gods, Kame-Sen’nin explicitly says that Vegeta’s anger over Bulma causes him to surpass Goku, but this line is left out of the Dragon Ball Super version of events, and is replaced by these lines from Beerus instead.
